Gonorrhea—Shrinking treatment options

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Gonorrhea is a relatively common infection among men who have sex with men, but it is becoming more common in heterosexual people. It is caused by the bactera Neisseria gonorrhoeae . This infection is transmitted via unprotected anal, oral and vaginal sex and can quickly be treated with antibiotics, but, if left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious problems. Such problems can occur because gonorrhea-causing germs move from the anus, penis or vagina toward the ovaries and testicles or these germs spread through the bloodstream to the skin, joints, heart or brain. Gonorrhea not only causes pain and suffering but, like many sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it can cause inflammation in delicate ano-genital tissue. Such inflammation makes it easier to acquire or transmit HIV.

The efficacy and safety of gentamicin plus azithromycin and gemifloxacin plus azithromycin as treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea.

BACKGROUND Ceftriaxone is the foundation of currently recommended gonorrhea treatment. There is an urgent need for backup treatment options for patients with cephalosporin allergy or infections due to suspected cephalosporin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of 2 combinations of existing noncephalosporin antimicrobials for treatment of patients with uro...

Emergence of multidrug-resistant, extensively drug-resistant and untreatable gonorrhea.

The new superbug Neisseria gonorrhoeae has retained resistance to antimicrobials previously recommended for first-line treatment and has now demonstrated its capacity to develop resistance to the extended-spectrum cephalosporin, ceftriaxone, the last remaining option for first-line empiric treatment of gonorrhea. An era of untreatable gonorrhea may be approaching, which represents an exceedingl...

In vitro activity of the new fluoroketolide solithromycin (CEM-101) against a large collection of clinical Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates and international reference strains, including those with high-level antimicrobial resistance: potential treatment option for gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea may become untreatable, and new treatment options are essential. We investigated the in vitro activity of the first fluoroketolide, solithromycin. Clinical Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates and reference strains (n = 246), including the two extensively drug-resistant strains H041 and F89 and additional isolates with clinical cephalosporin resistance and multidrug resistance, were examine...

Emerging antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae: urgent need to strengthen prevention strategies.

Prevention and control of gonorrhea is an important public health concern due to the high burden of disease, the recent increase in reported infection rates, and the reproductive and economic consequences of infection. Effective antibiotic treatment is one essential component of an integrated approach to gonorrhea control. Over the past 60 years, however, development of resistance in Neisseria ...

Single-Dose Oral Therapy for Uncomplicated Gonorrhea

Background. Progressive resistance to antimicrobial agents has reduced options for gonorrhea therapy worldwide. Solithromycin (CEM-101) is a novel oral fluoroketolide antimicrobial with substantial in vitro activity against Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Methods. We conducted a phase 2 trial of 2 oral doses of solithromycin (1200 and 1000 mg) for treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea. Results. A total o...
